Turkey

Turkeys that get a forage-
based diet taste great!
At our farm, young turkeys are protected from predators in wire field shelters that are moved daily to fresh pasture. As they grow larger and need more room to move about freely, they’re protected by portable netting that is moved to a new area of pasture every few days.
Turkeys are given as much organic grain feed as they want to supplement their basic diet of live grass and bugs. Their forage-based diet produces juicy, fine-textured meat with wonderful flavor, as well as a higher proportion of GLAs (gamma linoleic acids) and lower saturated fat.
Since our turkeys are raised out of doors, more of their calories are used to generate warmth, compared to quick-to-fatten, industrially produced birds, where huge numbers live crowded in heated outbuildings. Therefore, the size of our turkeys depends on the weather. Mild autumn temperatures mean more meat per bird. On average, our organic, minimally processed turkeys weigh 12 to 18 lbs.
