Pricing
Pike Valley Farm Foods is family owned and operated. Our herds and flocks are comparatively small and quantities are limited. Our prices reflect the extra effort required to produce premium quality meats, poultry, and eggs. We present our philosophy and farming methods with total transparency.
Organic vs. Organic
Unlike our industrial counterparts, we raise livestock according to sustainable agricultural practices in addition to meeting certified organic standards. Organic livestock producers are regulated and must keep detailed records about animal husbandry, feed grain, and sources. While the ”USDA certified organic” label provides assurances that farm land is free of chemical residue, products are pure, and regulations are met, lobbyists who represent large producers pressured for loopholes. As a result, large operations are able to charge a higher price for products labeled “certified organic,” but that may mislead consumers about quality.
For example, instead of being 100% “grass-fed” as the label implies, beef cattle can be given organic grain (which is not chosen freely) and only “grass finished.” Our beef cattle receive nothing but grass. To be considered “free-ranged,” chickens must have access to the outdoors only during the final two weeks of their life cycle. By the time the door is opened, chickens are overweight from being sedentary and have no interest in going out. In either case, the final product can be labeled “certified organic,” but will have a much higher percentage of fat than meat from animals that were actually raised on pasture.
Throughout their lives, our animals have a forage-based diet, move about freely, and are naturally healthy, not kept in close proximity to their own droppings. We’re not willing to compromise the quality of our products nor artificially spur growth or profits by restricting animal mobility. It’s that simple.
