Product Descriptions

At Pike Valley Farm, we provide fresh forage to cows by rotating them to a new pasture paddock with fresh grass each day and keep them in herds with portable electric fencing. This practice also ensures that our pastures are never over-grazed. This natural model heals the land, thickens the forage, reduces weeds, stimulates earthworms, reduces pathogens, and increases nutritional qualities in the meat.

Pastured Broilers

To grow meat birds, we use floorless, portable field shelters that house about 75 birds each. Moved daily to a fresh pasture paddock, the birds receive fresh air, exercise, sunshine, and all the certified organic grain they want, plus bugs and copious amounts of salad (green material), which is key to all animal protein nutrition. Integrating the cows to mow ahead of the shelters shortens the grass and encourages ingestion of tender, fresh sprouts. At Pike Valley Farm, every animal is encouraged to eat as much green material as its full genetic potential will allow.

Pastured Eggs

Known as the eggmobile, our portable henhouse allows the laying hens to free range in vast amounts of green pasture. Just as birds in nature follow herbivores as biological cleasers, our birds eat bugs and scratch through cattle droppings to sanitize the pasture. They winter in a deeply bedded hoop house that provides solar warmth and comfort.

Savannah Pork

Our cows are integrated into the process of providing the ideal habitat for pigs. In winter, cows are fed our own organic hay as they lounge in a pole shed bedded down with woodchips, sawdust, and old hay that absorbs nutrients. The anaerobic situation of heavy cows walking on the bedding helps to ferment it. Adding organic corn, which also ferments, creates a tasty salary for pigs as they aerate the bedding. Oxygenation turns the entire deep bedding into a compost pile, which is the backbone of the farm s fertility program. In summer and fall, the pigs are kept on savannah pastures and rotated every few days with electric fence.
