Winston and Teresa Pike take pride in their farm on Herrington Lake in Garrard County, just south of Lexington in the Bluegrass region of Central Kentucky. The land has been in the Pike family for decades, continually protected from conventional farming techniques that deplete soil nutrients and allow runoff to pollute rivers and streams.
In 1973, Winston Pike's father purchased land that had been a lakefront summer camp to start a U-pick strawberry operation. As a teenager, Winston raised hogs to earn money for college. He eventually bought the land from his dad and began farming in earnest. Winston and Teresa are serious students of sustainable farming methods. They attend conferences, workshops, and visit other working farms that employ these techniques, such as Polyface Farm.
