According to feedback from our customers, Pike Valley Farm Foods fresh turkeys are simply “the best.” Available seasonally in limited quantity, our turkeys are certified organic. If you know you’ll want one or two, it’s best to order in advance.
Our turkeys are raised in a brooder until about 7 weeks of age. As they grow larger and need more room to move about freely, they’re protected by portable electric netting that is moved to a new area of pasture every few days. This protects them from predators and allows them freely enjoy the grass and bugs.
Turkeys are given as much organic grain feed as they want to supplement their basic diet of live grass and bugs. Their forage-based diet produces juicy, fine-textured meat with wonderful flavor, as well as a higher proportion of GLAs (gamma linoleic acids) and lower saturated fat.
Since our turkeys are raised out of doors, more of their calories are used to generate warmth, compared to quick-to-fatten, industrially produced birds, where huge numbers live crowded in heated outbuildings. Therefore, the size of our turkeys depends on the weather. Mild autumn temperatures mean more meat per bird. On average, our organic, minimally processed turkeys range anywhere from 12 to 20 lbs.
